About Government Degree College Kargil
Government Degree College, Kargil is located in the centre of district Kargil located at Baghe-e-Khomeni, Kurbathang plateau and is situated at an altitude of 8500 feet above the sea level and spreads across an area of 31183.37 square meters. The, college was brought into inception on 31st of March 1995, marked a significant milestone in the region’s academic landscape, heralding a new era of intellectual pursuit and educational enlightenment. This auspicious occasion was graced by the distinguished presence of Retired General K.V. Krishna Rao, the venerable Governor of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, whose august inauguration ceremony bestowed upon the college an aura of solemnity and promise. The journey of the college started with a Gross Student Enrolment of 25 students only, but over the years the enrolment has increased significantly touched to the Gross Student Enrolment of 2266 in 2017-18. Since its establishment the college has witnessed higher enrolment of girls than boys marking it as a strong centre for women empowerment. In the wake of the transformative events of 2019, the Government Degree College Kargil assumed a pivotal role as one of the revered constituent colleges of the newly established University of Ladakh, thereby cementing its position as a beacon of enlightenment and academic endeavour. Committed to fostering intellectual growth, nurturing cultural richness, and facilitating holistic development, the college stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the youth of Kargil. Against the backdrop of the National Education Policy NEP-2020, which serves as a comprehensive blueprint for the revitalization of India’s educational landscape, the college remains steadfast in its dedication to excellence and innovation in higher education, poised to shape the minds of future generations and ignite the flames of knowledge and inquiry. In order to align with the NEP-2020 and market demand the college has established six skill centres including Graphic Designing, Housekeeping, Yoga & Wellness, professional makeup artist, Beauty therapy and Traditional hand Embroidery with the financial support from LSDM, UT Ladakh in 2023 and offering skill courses to the students in collaboration with Skill sector councils.
At present the college has beautiful architectural buildings which includes administrative block consisting of Principal chamber, clerical section and staff chamber, lecturer block consisting of six Hall with a capacity of 100-120 students, Science laboratory block consisting Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Physics laboratory with a capacity of 35-40 students, Humanities block with 11 lecture Halls, Commerce block, Girls Hostel and Principal Quarter. The construction of Science Laboratory with state of Art & Museum, Biotechnology/Geology block and indoor stadium cum multipurpose hall and Girls Hostel under PMDP are at its verge of completion. The college has four buses to cater to and fro transportation of students at a nominal fee. The college is a carbon neutral campus with 24-hour uninterrupted solar power supplies. Besides the regular academics, the college has study centre of IGNOU, MANUU and Distance Education University of Kashmir are providing UG, PG and Bed courses to the public. The college was affiliated in the UGC list under section 2(f) 12(b) on 17th of March 2005 and also NAAC accredited grade “B” in 2019.
