The Department of Botany at Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil organized a three-day sowing and plantation drive from March 31 to April 2 in the college’s botanical garden and other identified areas of the campus. The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness, strengthen ecological responsibility, and encourage sustainable practices among students.
During the three-day programme, faculty members, students, MTS staffs and volunteers actively participated in sowing seeds and planting a variety of saplings, including ornamental and indigenous plant species. The drive focused on enhancing the green cover of the campus while also educating participants about the importance of biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration.
The event also featured brief awareness sessions where students were informed about proper planting techniques, plant care, and the long-term benefits of afforestation. Participants showed great enthusiasm and commitment throughout the programme, making the initiative a meaningful and impactful experience.
The 5th semester students are actively engaged in their project work focusing on the cultivation of medicinal plants of Bergenia species under different soil treatments under the guidance of Dr. Tsetan Dolker, Assistant Professor Botany. As part of the study, garden soil is being used as the control (Treatment 1), while alternative treatments include a mixture of cocopeat and vermicompost (Treatment 2) and a combination of sand soil and garden soil (Treatment 3). This initiative aims to evaluate the impact of varied soil compositions on the growth and development of these medicinally significant plants.
Other students are engaged under the Guidance of Dr. Tsetan Dolkar (A.A)in their project work on hands-on learning on mulching sowing seeds of Pisum sativum (Pea plant) under both mulched and open conditions.
Depth effect and size of seed: Sowing depth is critical for germination and seedling vigor, directly influencing moisture access, temperature, and emergence time. Optimal depth is required (depending on seed size/type) to ensure adequate moisture.
