The Department of Environmental Sciences, Govt. Degree College Kargil, organized a one-day educational trip to the laboratory of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh, and to the area near Sankoo on Monday 29th September 2025. The aim of the trip was to provide hands-on training on the instruments available in the Department of Environmental Sciences.
The faculty and students were warmly welcomed by the in-charge administration Kargil Campus and the faculty of Department of Environmental Sciences, Kargil Campus. A fruitful interaction was held between the faculty members and students of both institutions, focusing on research opportunities, academic collaboration, and field-based learning.
During the visit, different parameters such as pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride, dissolved oxygen (DO), and turbidity of water samples collected from different sites by the students were also analysed. Furthermore, Dr. Sonam Angmo highlighted the importance of these parameters for maintaining a healthy environment and emphasized the impact of anthropogenic activities on water quality and ecosystem health as a whole.
In the second half of the day, the students were taken to the Sankoo area, where they were trained to identify different types of rocks and were introduced to the processes involved in rock formation. The session was conducted by Dr. Gulzar Hussain from the Department of Geology, who explained various geological features and their environmental significance.
Later, a visit to a flood-affected area in Lankerchey Sankoo was conducted to make the students aware of the causes, impacts, and mitigation measures of flash floods in the region. A questionnaire-based survey was also carried out among the affected residents to assess the socio-economic impact of the disaster and to gather their perspectives on effective strategies to reduce disaster risks in Kargil and Ladakh as a whole.
The students had ample experience and acknowledged the importance of conducting such trips to higher education institutions for enhancing their future studie.
